FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear Answers for Difficult Decisions

What is vertigo, and how do I know if I have it?

Vertigo is a sensation of spinning or dizziness, often caused by inner ear issues. If you frequently feel unsteady or experience spinning sensations, it may be vertigo. A proper evaluation can confirm the condition.

How long does vestibular rehabilitation therapy take to show results?

Most patients begin to see noticeable improvements within 4 to 6 weeks of consistent treatment, though some people experience relief within just a few sessions while others may require several months. The timeline varies significantly based on your specific condition:

  • BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo) patients often see improvement within a few days to a week
  • For conditions like vestibular neuritis, concussion-related dizziness, or chronic imbalance, improvements typically appear within 4-6 weeks of regular sessions and daily home exercises
  • Overall, it can take anywhere from six weeks to three months to see results

The severity of your symptoms, consistency with home exercises, and your overall health all influence recovery time.

Do I need a referral from a doctor to book a consultation?

Most healthcare facilities require a physician’s referral to access vestibular rehabilitation services, though this referral can come from any physician, including your primary care doctor or an ENT specialist. However, some facilities do not require physician referrals before your first appointment, except for specific locations. It’s best to check with your specific provider about their referral requirements.

Is the treatment painful?

While some exercises may initially cause mild dizziness or discomfort, they are designed to be safe and gradually progressive. Some people experience dizziness and nausea during therapy, but these symptoms are temporary. The treatment itself is not painful, it primarily involves controlled head movements, eye exercises, and balance training that may temporarily provoke the dizziness you’re trying to treat, which is actually part of the therapeutic process.

Can vertigo and balance problems really be treated?

Yes, absolutely. BPPV is the most common cause of vertigo and can be treated effectively, with canalith repositioning maneuvers being very effective. Evidence has shown that vestibular rehabilitation can be effective in improving symptoms related to many vestibular and inner ear disorders. Physical therapy can be highly effective in managing balance disorders, with vestibular rehabilitation therapy focusing on improving the function of your inner ear

Treatment success depends on accurate diagnosis and consistent participation in therapy, but many patients experience significant improvement in their symptoms and quality of life.
